Is Your Marriage Safe In Today's Economy

Your Marriage and The Economy

You may be wondering what your marriage has to do with the economy, but is your marriage safe in today's economy, is a question that must be answered for most couples.  Numerous studies have shown that money is the No. 1 reason why couples argue and many of the recently divorced say those battles were the main reason why they untied the knot.

While anyone will tell you that talking about money is the first step in resolving problems, talk alone won't do the trick.

In fact, a 2004 study found that more than 70% of couples talk about money on a weekly basis. So what's the problem?  The problem is that most of us don't know how to talk about money.  Many tend to be reactive and emotional about money, not strategic.

When emotions run high, people tend to make fiscal mistakes. The solution: Approach family finances as if you were running a business.  If you can treat it like a business that is a partnership, you will be surprised how much more methodical people can be.

Of all the issues that spark a fight, debt ranked No. 1 for most.  Couples often don't see eye to eye on how much debt is too much and which kind of debt is bad.  One of the best things you and your spouse can do is learn more about money management - together.  If you both learn, you will both be on the same page and coming to an agreement is easier when you are armed with the same knowledge.
In addition we should also remember that evveryone has different backgrounds, different experiences and different things that cause them to think or react in various ways, none of which can all be changed overnight.  Be patient with each other and come to an understanding that both of you will give your very best effort to talk things over and handle the issues with a calm, open mind.  Most likely you wouldn't scream at a business partner, so try to remember not to handle your home business in that manner either.  If things begin to get heated, take a step back and cool off.
There are numerous strategies for handling home finances effectively and you will be surprised with what you can do as a team, so be sure to take the time to learn about money management, debt management and also marriage management.
